Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Suzuki Swift Mk4 (A2L, 2017–present) is a simple engine-bay job, but there’s one extra point on the mild-hybrid (SHVS) versions. This guide covers safe disconnection, the SHVS caution, and re-teaching the windows afterwards.
Where the Battery Is
The main 12 V battery sits in the engine bay. On SHVS mild-hybrid Swifts (BoosterJet / Dualjet badges) there is also a separate small lithium battery under the front passenger seat — leave that one alone; this guide is for the standard 12 V battery only.
Disconnecting
- Turn the ignition off and wait 3 minutes before touching the terminals.
- Disconnect the earth (negative, −) cable first and tuck it clear.
- If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) cable next, then the clamp.
Safety: the 3-minute wait lets airbag/pretensioner circuits discharge. On SHVS cars don’t disturb the under-seat lithium unit.
Reconnecting & Re-teaching
- Reconnect positive (+) first, then the earth (−) last.
- Reset the clock and radio presets.
- Re-initialise the power windows — one-touch drops out after a power cut. The Swift method involves the window fuses; see our window guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which terminal do I disconnect first on a Swift?
The earth/negative (−) first; reconnect it last.
Does the Swift battery need coding?
No registration is required — just refit it and re-teach the windows.
My Swift is a mild hybrid — is it safe?
Yes, for the engine-bay 12 V battery. Don’t disturb the small lithium SHVS battery under the front passenger seat.
Why won’t my windows auto-close now?
The power cut cleared the learned limits. Run the window re-initialise (it uses the P/W fuses).
For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the oil reminder, see our Swift Mk4 service reset.
