Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Suzuki Swift Mk4 (A2L) 2017-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

If your Suzuki Swift Mk4 (A2L, 2017–present) key has gone weak — short range, or keyless start asking you to hold the fob to the button — it almost always just needs a fresh coin cell. The Swift came with two key styles, and they take different batteries, so check which you have first.

Which Battery You Need

  • Keyless ‘smart’ fob (push-button start): CR2032, fitted positive side up.
  • Flip / blade key (held in a slot): CR1616, fitted positive side down.

Keyless Smart Fob (CR2032)

  1. Slide out the emergency key blade and use the slot to split the two cases.
  2. Lift the transmitter from its holder with a small screwdriver.
  3. Pop out the old cell; fit a new CR2032 positive-side up.
  4. Refit the transmitter and click the cases together.

Flip Key (CR1616)

  1. Remove the small screw and lift off the key cover.
  2. Take the transmitter from its holder and separate the cases.
  3. Fit a new CR1616 positive-side down.
  4. Reassemble and refit the cover and screw.

Lock and unlock from a few metres to confirm.

Good to Know

Changing the battery never needs reprogramming. Programming an extra key does require Suzuki diagnostic equipment, but that’s separate from a battery swap. If keyless start fails, hold the fob against the start button as you press — the car reads the transponder directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does a Suzuki Swift key take?

The keyless smart fob uses a CR2032; the flip/blade key uses a CR1616.

Which way up does the battery go?

CR2032 (smart fob) positive up; CR1616 (flip key) positive down.

Do I need to reprogram the key?

No — only adding a brand-new key needs dealer programming.

Keyless start still won’t work — what now?

Hold the fob directly against the start button while pressing it.
