Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Tesla Model S (2012–2021) — for storage or before work near the airbags — is the low-voltage battery only. The high-voltage drive battery is sealed and must never be touched. The 12 V battery is at the front of the car.
Find the 12 V Battery First
The 12 V battery is at the front of the car, accessed by removing the front trunk (frunk) liner and trim. Most settings are stored in your Tesla account, so little is lost.
High voltage: never touch the orange high-voltage cabling. This procedure is only the 12 V battery.
Disconnecting Safely
- Power the car off from the touchscreen (Controls > Safety > Power Off) and wait a couple of minutes.
- Open the frunk and remove the liner/trim to reach the battery.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
- Working near airbags? Wait a few minutes after disconnecting.
Reconnecting
Reconnect positive first, then negative. Afterwards:
- Allow the car a minute to re-establish its systems before driving.
- Power windows — re-initialise if one-touch is lost.
- Air suspension re-levels once driving; TPMS re-stores on a short drive.
- Refit the frunk liner.
