Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Tesla Model S (2012-2021). For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Tesla Model S (2012–2021) uses a key fob (the ‘car-shaped’ remote) that contains a coin cell. When the remote becomes weak or unresponsive, the cell is almost certainly flat. It’s a quick swap with a CR2032.

Battery First — What You Need

  • A CR2032 coin cell.
  • A small flat-bladed screwdriver.

Replacing the Cell

  1. Use a flat-bladed screwdriver to remove the key cover.
  2. Remove the old cell — don’t touch the terminals.
  3. Fit a new CR2032 with the positive side facing up.
  4. Refit the battery cover and the outer cover.
  5. Test it — press the fob to lock and unlock the car.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Help

  • Check the orientation — positive side up.
  • Hold the fob close to the car (the door-handle area) while it re-syncs.
  • Still not working? Re-pair the fob via the touchscreen (Controls > Locks).
