The cabin air filter on a Tesla Model S (2012–2021) cleans the air entering the car; a clogged filter causes weak airflow and musty smells. Where it lives depends on whether you have a pre-facelift or facelift car.
How to replace the Model S cabin air filter
2012–2016 (pre-facelift) — the filter is reached from the frunk:
- Open the frunk and find the HVAC intake cover (a clipped plastic panel at the base of the windscreen).
- Release the clips and lift the cover off.
- Pull out the old filter(s) and fit the new one with the airflow arrows pointing down into the HVAC intake.
- Refit the cover.
2017–2021 (facelift) — the filter moved to the passenger footwell:
- Turn the climate control off and slide the front passenger seat fully back.
- Gently pull down the footwell cover to release it and unclip the electrical connector.
- Squeeze the filter door lock to release it, and slide the old filter out of the HVAC module.
- Fit the new filter with the airflow arrows pointing towards the rear, then refit the cover.
Tesla suggests replacing the cabin filter about every 2 years — sooner in dusty areas or if a smell develops.
