Enter Service Mode

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 9, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Tesla Model S (2012-2021).
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Service Mode is the Tesla Model S’s built-in diagnostic interface — the same mode Tesla technicians use. You reach it from the touchscreen with a simple access code, no tools needed. It caps speed and torque and switches some systems to safe defaults, so it is for inspection and light service work, not for driving.

How to Enter Service Mode — Step by Step

  1. Park the car, shift to Park, and keep your foot off the accelerator.
  2. On the touchscreen, tap Controls (the car icon), then Software.
  3. Touch and hold the large “MODEL S” wordmark for about 2 seconds, then release.
  4. An access-code box appears. Type service (all lowercase) and tap OK.
  5. The screen shows SERVICE MODE in red (newer software also adds a red border). You are in.

If no access-code box appears, your car’s software predates Service Mode. Update to the latest version and try again.

What Service Mode Shows on the Model S

The menu is grouped by system — battery, drive units, charging, chassis and suspension. On a Model S with air suspension, the Suspension section reads the ride height at each corner and the air-compressor status, and lets you raise, lower or calibrate the suspension for service.

Coil-spring cars show a reduced suspension section. The other sections let you read live values and run the self-tests Tesla service uses, which is why the mode is handy for diagnosing a fault before booking a service visit.

Service Mode vs Service Mode Plus

What the service code opens is standard Service Mode. Service Mode Plus is an extra tier that unlocks only when a technician connects the car to Tesla Toolbox — a paid, Tesla-internal subscription — so it is not owner-accessible. Everything described here is standard Service Mode.

Safety — Do Not Drive in Service Mode

Many safety systems are disabled, and speed and torque are limited, while Service Mode is active. Use it parked, for inspection and light service only, and exit before you drive.

How to Exit Service Mode

  1. On the touchscreen, tap Controls, then Service Mode.
  2. Tap Exit Service Mode at the top of the menu.
  3. The red overlay clears and normal driving functions return. If a fault still shows, cycle the car (Park, doors closed, wait) and re-check.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Tesla Service Mode access code?

It is the word service, typed in lowercase into the access-code box after you hold the “MODEL S” wordmark. It is the same on every current Tesla.

Does entering Service Mode void my warranty?

Entering standard Service Mode yourself does not void your warranty, but Tesla logs mode activity. Do not change calibrations you do not understand — resetting values or clearing data can cause faults you will need Tesla to put right.

Can I drive my Model S in Service Mode?

No. Speed and torque are capped and safety features are off. It is a parked-service tool; exit it before driving.

My early Model S has no Service Mode — why?

Service Mode arrived in later software. Very early cars still on MCU1 that cannot run a recent enough version will not show the access-code prompt. Make sure the car is fully updated.

To read and clear stored fault codes rather than enter Service Mode, see autodtcs.com.
