Every Tesla door latches electrically, so it is worth knowing how to get out of a Model S (2012–2021) if the 12 V power is ever dead. The good news: the front doors still open normally — only the rear doors need a manual release.
Front doors — no special step
If the Model S has no power, the front doors open as usual using the interior door handles. There is nothing extra to do.
How to open a rear door with no power
- Reach down to the carpet below the rear seat, at the base of the door.
- Fold back the edge of the carpet to expose the mechanical release cable.
- Pull the release cable toward the center of the car. The rear door unlatches and you can push it open.
Important
- Use the manual release only when the car has no power. When it has power, use the interior door handle as normal.
- The front doors never need the manual release — they always open from the inside handle.
Frequently asked questions
My Model S is dead — can I still get out?
Yes. The front doors open normally from the inside handle even with no power. For a rear door, fold back the rear-seat carpet and pull the mechanical release cable toward the center of the car.
Where is the rear-door manual release on a Model S?
Under the carpet at the base of the rear door — fold the carpet edge back to reach the release cable.
Do the front doors have a manual release?
They do not need one — the front interior door handles work mechanically even without power.
