The falcon-wing rear doors on a Tesla Model X (2016–2021) open electrically. If the car loses 12 V power, every falcon door has a mechanical release cable so occupants can still get out — a genuine safety feature worth knowing before you ever need it.
How to open a Model X falcon-wing door with no power
- Look at the speaker cover in the front lower corner of the falcon door’s inner trim.
- There’s a lip in the upper rear corner of that cover — use it to prise the cover off, exposing the speaker and a thin metal wire beside it.
- Give the wire a firm pull towards the front of the car to unlatch the door.
- Push the door up — you only need to open it enough to climb out. It takes some effort because you’re working against the door’s weight and struts.
The front doors are different: they open with the manual release lever next to the window switches. Use these manual releases only when there’s no power — normally the door buttons do the job.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get out of a Model X if the power dies?
Front doors: pull the manual lever by the window switches. Falcon (rear) doors: pop the speaker cover in the door’s front lower corner and pull the metal release wire towards the front of the car.
Why are the falcon doors hard to push open manually?
You’re lifting the door’s weight without power assistance — open it just enough to climb out.
If the doors stopped because of a flat 12 V battery, see our guide on opening the frunk and replacing the Model X 12 V battery, or check the fault on autodtcs.com.
