Put the Car in Tow / Transport Mode

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 1, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Tesla Model X (2016-2021).
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If your Tesla Model X (2016–2021) has to be winched onto a flatbed or rolled a short distance, it must be in Transport (Tow) Mode — otherwise the parking brakes stay locked and the wheels won’t turn.

How to put a Model X in Tow / Transport Mode

  1. Shift into Park and press the brake pedal.
  2. On the touchscreen, tap Controls > Service > Towing.
  3. Touch Enter Tow Mode and follow the on-screen confirmation.
  4. The car releases its parking brakes and can be rolled slowly (walking pace at most) or winched onto a flatbed.

Important: Transport Mode needs working 12 V power — a completely dead car can’t enable it from the screen, so restore 12 V first. On air-suspension cars, the vehicle may raise to a towing height as part of the process. The mode cancels if you shift back to Park on the touchscreen, and the Model X should always be transported on a flatbed, not towed on its wheels.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my Model X roll onto the truck?
Without Transport Mode the parking brakes hold the wheels. Enable it via Controls > Service > Towing so the car free-rolls.

Can I activate Tow Mode with a dead battery?
No — it needs 12 V power for the touchscreen. Restore 12 V power first, then enable it.

If a drivetrain, air-suspension or brake warning is involved, you can look up the fault code on autodtcs.com.
