Use Wiper Service Mode and Replace the Wiper Blades

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 1, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Tesla Model X (2016-2021).
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before changing the wiper blades on a Tesla Model X (2016–2021), put the wipers in Service Mode — this lifts them to a reachable position and disables auto-wipe so an arm can’t sweep while your hands are on it.

How to use Wiper Service Mode on a Model X

  1. Put the car in Park and turn the wipers off.
  2. On the touchscreen, tap Controls > Service > Wiper Service Mode (on older software it’s under Controls > Settings > Service & Reset).
  3. The wipers move up to the service position.
  4. Change the blades, then shift out of Park (or toggle the setting off) and the wipers return to their parked position.

Lay a towel on the glass while you work. Release the old blade’s clip, slide it off, and clip the new one on until it locks. Blade lengths vary by year on the Model X — measure the old blades (or check the fitment for your exact year) before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my Model X wipers lift off the glass?
They park low and auto-wipe can trigger them. Enable Wiper Service Mode first to raise them and lock out auto-wipe.

What size wiper blades does a Model X use?
It varies by model year — measure your current blades or check the fitment for your year before ordering.

If a wiper or washer warning appears afterwards, you can look up the fault code on autodtcs.com.
