Home/Toyota/C-HR/Mk1 (XW10) 2016-2023/Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Toyota C-HR Mk1 (XW10) 2016-2023. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

A frozen touchscreen is one of the most-reported complaints on the Toyota C-HR (Mk1/AX10, 2016–2023) — the display locks up, goes black, or stops responding to touch. The good news is that almost every freeze is a software hang, and forcing the head unit to reboot fixes it on the spot without losing a single setting.

Which System Your C-HR Has

The first-generation C-HR uses Toyota Touch 2, sold either as plain Touch 2 (radio/media) or Touch 2 with Go (with built-in navigation) on the 8-inch unit. There is a rotary Power/Volume knob to the side of the screen. This unit has a well-known tendency to freeze, lag, or briefly black out — it is documented widely enough that owners simply learn the reboot. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not fitted at launch; they arrived on later cars and via dealer software updates, so behaviour varies by build year.

Soft Reset (Reboot the Screen)

  1. Have the ignition on or the engine running — ideally parked.
  2. Press and hold the Power/Volume knob beside the screen for 10 to 20 seconds.
  3. Keep holding until the screen goes black and the Toyota logo appears.
  4. Release. The unit reboots and the home screen returns in about half a minute.

Safe — No Data Lost

This reboot keeps everything. Radio presets, paired phones, navigation favourites and settings all remain — the long press just power-cycles the head unit. It is the same as restarting a phone, and you can repeat it whenever the screen acts up.

If It Stays Frozen

  • Hold the knob the full 20 seconds — the C-HR unit sometimes needs the longer hold before the logo appears.
  • Turn the ignition off, lock the car, and leave it 5 minutes. Letting the car sleep cuts power to the unit and clears a deeper lock-up.
  • Have a software update done. Toyota issued updates for the C-HR’s freezing/black-screen behaviour; a dealer can flash the latest version, which is the most reliable cure for repeat freezes.
  • Reset Bluetooth — delete the phone from the car and the car from the phone, then re-pair — if the lock-up follows a connection.

Factory Reset (Erases Data)

If the unit freezes constantly, a factory reset clears corrupt data. Go to Setup → General → Delete personal data (some menus label it Restore factory settings). This erases presets, pairings, favourites and logins, so try the reboot and a software update first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my C-HR screen freeze so often?

The Touch 2 / Touch 2 with Go unit in the Mk1 C-HR is genuinely prone to freezing and black-screen episodes — it is one of the most common owner complaints. A reboot clears each event; a dealer software update reduces how often it happens.

Will the reboot erase my navigation favourites?

No. Holding the Power/Volume knob only restarts the unit. Favourites, presets and pairings are kept; only the factory-reset menu wipes them.

My C-HR didn’t have CarPlay — can a reset add it?

No. CarPlay/Android Auto depend on the hardware and software version. A reset won’t add them; only a compatible head unit or an official software update can.

The screen goes black on its own — is that the same fix?

Usually yes. A spontaneous black screen is the same software hang; the knob reboot brings it back. If it recurs daily, ask a dealer about the software update or a faulty unit.

Is it safe to hold the knob for 20 seconds?

Yes. The unit is designed to reboot on a long press — you cannot damage it. If nothing happens, the ignition may not be on.

If a fault code is logged alongside the freeze, look it up first on autodtcs.com.
