Jump-Start a Dead Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota Corolla Mk11 (E170) 2014-2019.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

A flat 12 V battery will stop a 2014–2019 Toyota Corolla cranking. Jump it in order and ground the last clamp to bare metal away from the battery. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Park a 12 V donor close but not touching; parking brake on, both ignitions off. Open the hood.
  2. Red (+) to the Corolla’s positive (+), then to the donor’s positive (+).
  3. Black (−) to the donor’s negative (−), then to a solid unpainted metal point on the Corolla, away from the battery and moving parts.
  4. Run the donor at a slightly raised idle ~5 minutes, then start the Corolla. Remove the cables in reverse order.

FAQ

Where does the negative clamp go?

Bare, unpainted metal away from the battery — not the dead battery’s negative post.

Can I push-start it?

No — the automatic/CVT can’t be push-started. Use cables or a jump pack.

It won’t hold a charge.

Have the battery and alternator tested.

If your Corolla stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
