Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota Tacoma Mk3 (N300) 2016-2023.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2016–2023 Toyota Tacoma you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative cable first. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Do your work, then reconnect positive first, negative last and tighten both.
  5. Switch on and check for warning lights; the TPMS re-initializes on the next drive.

FAQ

Which terminal first?

Negative off first, negative on last.

Anything to re-set afterward?

The clock and radio presets; some driver settings restore on their own. On a smart-key truck, cycle a door after reconnecting.

Can I recharge it on the truck?

Yes — but disconnect the ground (negative) cable first before connecting a charger.

If your Tacoma stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
