If the remote on your Vauxhall Astra (Mk7/K, 2015–2021) has stopped unlocking the doors and the dash flashes “No key detected”, the coin cell in the fob has almost certainly gone flat. You are not stranded. The Astra K hides a metal emergency blade inside the fob to get you in, and the keyless cars have a dedicated backup-start spot — on this GM-era Astra that spot is in the centre console, not against the START/STOP button.
The Astra K came two ways. Many SRi and Elite cars have keyless entry with a START/STOP button. Entry trims (Design and similar) use a flip key you slot in and twist, where a flat fob never stops the engine. Check which one you have first.
Start a Keyless Astra K With a Dead Fob
This is where the Astra K differs from the newer Astra L. On the push-button Astra K, you drop the fob into a backup-read location in the centre console rather than holding it to the button:
- Get into the car first with the emergency blade (see the next section) — the door buttons will not respond on a flat fob.
- Sit in, press the brake pedal and hold it down.
- Place the fob into the backup-start location with the buttons facing up. On a console with two cup holders this is the front cup holder; on a single-cup-holder console it is the marked spot behind the cup holder.
- With the fob sitting in that spot, press the START/STOP button. The car powers the passive chip, recognises your key and releases the engine.
- The engine starts. If it does not read first time, reseat the fob and try again.
A “No key detected” or “Key battery low” message on the cluster is your cue to use this spot.
Unlock the Astra K With the Emergency Key Blade
A metal blade folds into the fob for exactly this situation.
- Press the button on the corner of the fob to release the flip blade, or slide the back catch and pull the blade out.
- Go to the driver’s door. The lock barrel sits behind a small plastic cap on the door handle — press the release on the back of the handle and ease the cap forward, or prise it with the blade tip, to expose the barrel.
- Insert the blade and turn it to unlock the driver’s door. The interior central-locking button frees the rest once you are inside.
- On flip-key (non-keyless) cars, slide that same blade into the ignition barrel and twist to start as normal.
Why a Flat Battery Does Not Strand You
The Astra K immobiliser never relied on the coin cell. Inside the fob is a passive transponder that draws its power from the car’s reader coil by induction, like a contactless bank card. The flat battery only kills the long-range radio that locks the doors from a distance. Sit the fob in the console backup spot, or twist the blade in the ignition, and the short-range coil powers the chip directly so the car still recognises your key.
Replace the Key Fob Battery
- Release and remove the emergency blade first — on the Astra K fob this helps the case split.
- Split the fob along its seam with a thin coin or plastic pry tool, working from the slot the blade left.
- Lift out the old cell. The Astra K fob uses a single CR2032 3V coin cell.
- Fit the new battery with the + side the same way up as the old one, handling it by the edges.
- Clip the case shut, push the blade back in and test the buttons. A fresh cell lasts roughly 2–3 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I put the fob on a keyless Astra K? In the centre-console backup spot — the front cup holder on a twin-cup console, or the marked area behind a single cup holder — buttons facing up. Not against the START/STOP button (that is the newer Astra L method).
My Astra K has a flip key I turn. Does a dead fob stop it starting? No. The flat battery only affects remote locking. Use the blade in the door and the same blade in the ignition.
Where is the hidden door lock on the Astra K? Behind a clip-off cap on the driver’s door handle. Release it from the back of the handle and ease the cap off to reveal the barrel.
Which battery does the Astra K fob take? A CR2032, sold in any supermarket or hardware shop.
It only started with the fob in the cup holder — is something broken? That usually just means the fob battery is weak or flat. Fit a fresh CR2032; if it keeps happening with a new cell, the fob’s transmitter may be failing.
