If your automatic Vauxhall Astra K (Mk7, 2015–2021) — sold in many markets as the Opel Astra — won’t come out of P, typically after a flat battery or a shift-interlock fault, there is a built-in emergency release so you can still move the car. It is a cabin-only override with no high-voltage or under-car work involved. This applies only to automatics; manual-gearbox Astras have no Park position and therefore no interlock to override. The lock you are dealing with is a safety device, not a broken part, and the release lets you free the lever by hand when the electronics can’t.
Why the Lever Locks in Park
On an automatic the selector is held in Park by a shift interlock — a small electric solenoid that only unlocks when it sees a healthy 12 V supply and the brake pedal pressed. It stops the car being bumped out of Park by accident. Because it runs on the 12 V system, a flat or weak battery is the usual reason the lever won’t budge: no power, no unlock. Other triggers are a failed interlock switch, a blown fuse, or a brake-light switch that isn’t signalling the pedal press. The mechanical release bypasses all of that so you can move the lever regardless — but it doesn’t fix the cause.
Getting Ready
- Park on level ground where possible — the car can roll the moment the lock lets go.
- Apply the parking brake or chock the wheels before touching the release. Don’t skip this.
- Have a small flat-blade screwdriver ready to unclip the trim and press the release tab.
- Decide where the car needs to go before you free it, so it doesn’t drift somewhere awkward.
- Keep passengers, children and pets clear until the car is secured again.
How to Release the Lever from P
- Apply the parking brake.
- Remove the cover around the gear lever — carefully unclip the trim by the selector.
- Insert a flat screwdriver into the access point and press the release tab as shown.
- Hold it pressed and move the gear lever out of ‘P’.
- Remove the screwdriver and refit the cover.
Vauxhall note that if the lever keeps sticking in P with a healthy battery, the shift interlock should be checked.
If It Won’t Release
- Keep the brake pedal pressed while you press the release tab — the mechanism and the interlock both expect the pedal down.
- Make sure you have unclipped the trim cleanly and can see the release tab, and that you are pressing the tab itself rather than the surrounding trim.
- Ease the cover up from the edge, not the middle, so you don’t crack the clips.
- A completely dead 12 V battery can leave the lever heavy — a jump or boost pack on the 12 V terminals often restores enough power to shift normally without the override.
- If the lever frees but the car won’t roll, confirm the display shows N and the parking brake is fully released before moving it.
What to Do Afterwards
This only gets you mobile — enough to roll off a driveway or onto a recovery truck. It is not a repair. If the lever wouldn’t release because the battery was flat, sort the battery first and the interlock should work normally again. If it kept sticking with a battery you know is good, follow the maker’s advice and have the shift interlock, its fuse and the brake-light switch checked, because the problem will come back. Refit the cover fully so it doesn’t rattle.

Can I just drive normally after using the release?
Treat it as a get-me-moving measure, not a fix. Use it to reposition the car, then deal with the cause — usually the 12 V battery. If the battery is fine and the lever keeps sticking, have the interlock inspected rather than relying on the override day to day.
