To change the wiper blades or lift them off the glass in winter on a Vauxhall Astra K (Mk7, 2015–2021) — Opel Astra — the arms need to be in their service position, standing up clear of the bonnet edge. If you just switch off, they park low under the bonnet lip where you can’t reach them. Here’s how to raise them.
Why You Need the Service Position
The Astra’s wipers park tucked below the bonnet trim. Forcing them up from there can bend an arm or crack the trim, so there’s a service-position mode.
How to Set the Wiper Service Position
- Make sure the bonnet is closed.
- Turn the ignition off, then within a short window operate the wiper stalk (flick to wipe) — the arms sweep up to the service position in the middle of the screen.
- Lift the arms away from the glass to change the blades or clear snow.
If your Astra has the wiper service-position option in the driver-information menu, you can also select it there.
Returning Them to Park
Fold the arms back onto the glass, then turn the ignition on and operate the wipers — they return to the normal parked position.
If the Wipers Won’t Lift
- You missed the time window — switch off and try the wiper stalk again promptly.
- The bonnet isn’t fully latched — make sure it’s closed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I put the Vauxhall Astra wipers in service position?
Turn the ignition off and operate the wiper stalk; the arms rise to the middle of the screen for blade changes.
Why won’t my wipers move up to be changed?
They park under the bonnet lip on purpose. Use the service-position mode rather than forcing them.
How do I get them back down?
Fold them onto the glass, turn the ignition on and operate the wipers.
Do I need a tool?
No — it’s done with the wiper stalk (or the info menu where fitted).
