Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Volvo S60 Mk3 (225) 2018-present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

When your Volvo S60 (225, 2018–present) remote (key tag) only works from close range, the coin cell inside is flat. It’s a quick swap with no reprogramming.

The Cell You Need

The S60 key tag takes a single CR2032 3 V coin cell. Buy one before you open it.

Opening the Key Tag

  1. Slide the catch and remove the emergency key blade from the tag.
  2. Use the blade slot to separate the two halves of the case.
  3. Lift out the old CR2032, noting which way up it sits.
  4. Fit the new cell the same way, click the halves together and refit the blade.

After the Swap

Lock and unlock once within range to confirm. A battery change keeps the existing pairing — no reprogramming needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does a Volvo S60 key take?

A single CR2032 coin cell.

Do I need to reprogram after changing it?

No — the key keeps its pairing through a battery change.

My key tag still won’t work — now what?

Hold the key tag against the marked spot (often the cupholder area) to start on the backup reader, then check the cell is seated correctly.

Which way up does the cell go?

Match the orientation of the old one before you remove it.

If the car won’t respond at all, the 12 V battery may be flat — see our S60 battery guide. For a stored code, look it up on autodtcs.com.
