Set the Wipers to Service Position

To change the blades or clear snow on your Volkswagen Up (2011–2023) you need the wipers in their upright service position. Park them normally and they sit tucked under the bonnet lip out of reach — here’s how to stand them up safely.

The service position — you might also hear it called the maintenance or winter position — lifts both front wiper arms high off the windscreen so you can get in behind them. On the Up you use it in two everyday situations: renewing the blades once they start to smear or judder, and standing the arms up in frosty weather so they do not freeze flat to the glass overnight and tear the rubber the first time you switch them on. It is a built-in feature of the car, not a fault, and the arms will only rise when you ask for the mode correctly.

Why There’s a Service Position

The Up parks its wipers low against the scuttle, tucked under the lip of the bonnet where they sit out of the airflow and out of sight. That low park point is exactly why you should not just grab an arm and lift it — the blade fouls the bonnet edge, and levering it up strains the wiper linkage and can crack the plastic trim. The service mode gets round that by first sweeping the arms up to a clear rest point where nothing is in the way, so you can then fold them off the glass safely.

Before You Start

• Make sure the bonnet is fully closed — the mode will not arm with it open.
• Set the ignition as the steps describe; the timing after switch-off matters.
• If the blades are frozen to the screen, ease them free first — lifting against ice can stall the motor.
• Have the replacement blades unpacked and ready so the arms are not left standing longer than needed.
• Work one arm at a time, keeping a hand on any arm that could spring back onto the glass.

Raising the Wipers

1. Make sure the bonnet is closed and the wipers are parked.

Putting Them Back

When you have finished, lay each arm back down onto the screen — do not drive off with them standing up. Then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once; they sweep and drop back to the parked position under the bonnet lip by themselves. If an arm does not settle exactly at park, one more full wipe cycle usually seats it.

Won’t Lift?

• Too slow — the stalk only triggers it for a few seconds after ignition-off; try the sequence again more promptly.
• Wrong ignition state — you need the on-then-off sequence, not the engine running.
• Bonnet ajar — latch it fully and try again; a bonnet that is not quite shut blocks the mode.
• Blades frozen down — free them from the ice first, then retry.
• Wipers weren’t parked — let them return to their normal rest point before you start.

Changing the Blades

With the arms standing clear, support the arm with one hand so it cannot spring back — a bare metal arm dropping onto the screen can crack it. Most Up blades use a common clip or hook fitting: release the catch, slide the old blade off, and click the new one on until it locks home. Fit the fresh blade, then lower the arm gently by hand rather than letting it snap down, and do both sides before you send the wipers back to park.
