Fluids, Capacities and Engine Specifications

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 8, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chrysler 300 Mk1 (LX) 2004-2011.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

A verified reference for the fluids, capacities and engine specifications of the first-generation Chrysler 300 / 300C (LX, 2004–2011), covering the full global line-up — the 2.7 L and 3.5 L V6 petrol, the 5.7 L HEMI V8, the 6.1 L SRT8 and, for European and other markets, the 3.0 L V6 CRD diesel. Figures below are the international-market specification; the note under each table flags where the North American market differs.

Engine Oil — Grade and Capacity

EngineOil grade (international)Capacity (with filter)
2.7 L V6 petrolSAE 5W-30 (API certified, MS-6395)5.7 L (6.0 qt)
3.5 L V6 petrolSAE 5W-30 (API certified, MS-6395)5.7 L (6.0 qt)
5.7 L HEMI V8SAE 5W-20 (API certified, MS-6395)6.6 L (7.0 qt)
6.1 L HEMI V8 (SRT8)Full-synthetic API SL/CF6.6 L (7.0 qt)
3.0 L V6 CRD dieselSAE 5W-30, ACEA C3 / MB 229.51 (Chrysler MS-11106)≈ 8.5 L

North American market: US-market petrol 300s take SAE 5W-20 in the 2.7 L and 10W-30 in the 3.5 L (the 5.7 L stays 5W-20). The CRD diesel was not sold in the US. Diesel oil capacity is quoted between about 8.5 and 9.5 L depending on source — confirm the exact figure and the current MB/ACEA approval for your car and year in its own handbook. Always check the oil-filler cap.

Coolant — Type and Capacity

All engines use Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (or equivalent to the same spec). Figures include the heater and the recovery bottle filled to MAX.

EngineCooling-system capacity
2.7 L V69.2 L (9.7 qt)
3.5 L V610.0 L (10.6 qt)
5.7 L HEMI V813.8 L (14.6 qt)
6.1 L HEMI V8 (SRT8)14.0 L (14.8 qt)
3.0 L V6 CRD diesel14.0 L (14.8 qt)

Fuel Tank & Automatic Transmission Fluid

ItemCapacity
Fuel tank — V6 (incl. 3.0 CRD)68 L (18 gal)
Fuel tank — V872 L (19 gal)
Auto transmission (NAG1) — service fill5.0 L (10.6 pt)
Auto transmission (42RLE) — service fill3.8 L (4.0 qt)

The 5-speed NAG1 (W5A580) automatic is behind the V8s, the 3.0 CRD and most 3.5s; the 4-speed 42RLE is behind the 2.7 L. Overhaul (dry) fills are larger — NAG1 7.7 L, 42RLE 8.3 L — but the service fill is what you replace at a fluid change.

Spark Plugs — Petrol Engines

The diesel uses glow plugs, not spark plugs, so it is not listed here. Each petrol engine takes a different plug and gap.

EnginePlug typeElectrode gapTorque
2.7 L V6RE10PMC50.048–0.058 in17 N·m (12.5 ft·lb)
3.5 L V6ZFR5LP-13G0.048–0.058 in28 N·m (20 ft·lb)
5.7 L HEMI V8Champion RE14MCC41.14 mm (0.045 in)To spec — tapered seat, do not over-tighten
6.1 L HEMI V8 (SRT8)NGK PLZTR5A-131.3 mm (0.050 in)15–20 N·m (11–15 ft·lb), max 15 ft·lb

The HEMI plugs are a tapered-seat design — over-tightening distorts them. Start every plug by hand to avoid cross-threading the aluminium heads.

A Note on Service Intervals and Markets

These are factory figures for the LX 300/300C. Oil grade and service intervals vary by market and duty cycle (the US and European schedules differ, and the diesel follows its own schedule), so for the exact interval and the current oil approval for your car, follow the maintenance schedule in your own owner’s handbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

What oil does the 3.0 CRD diesel take? SAE 5W-30 meeting ACEA C3 / MB 229.51 (Chrysler MS-11106), about 8.5 L with filter. Use a low-SAPS oil to protect the diesel particulate filter.

Does the petrol 300 use 5W-20 or 5W-30? International-market cars are specified 5W-30 for the 2.7 L and 3.5 L; US-market cars use 5W-20 (2.7 L) and 10W-30 (3.5 L). The 5.7 L HEMI is 5W-20 everywhere.

What coolant does the 300C use? Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (HOAT) or an equivalent to the same spec — do not mix in ordinary green coolant.

Which automatic transmission is in my 300? The 5-speed NAG1 behind the V8s, diesel and most 3.5 L cars; the 4-speed 42RLE behind the 2.7 L. Service fills are 5.0 L and 3.8 L respectively.
