Jump-Start the Car

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 22, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mitsubishi Outlander Mk3 (GF) 2012-2021.

A flat 12 V battery is the usual reason a Mitsubishi Outlander (GF, 2012–2021) won’t start — and on the automatic it also locks the selector in Park. With jumper cables and a healthy 12 V donor you can get going in minutes, but Mitsubishi is specific about where the last clip goes.

Before You Start

  • The donor must be a 12 V system. Set both parking brakes, put the Outlander in P (Park), and don’t let the cars touch.
  • Switch both ignitions off and turn off all lights and electrical loads.
  • Never jump a battery that looks frozen or is low on fluid — it can split or explode.
  • Remove watches and metal jewellery, and keep cables clear of the cooling fans and belts.

How to Connect the Cables

  1. Connect one end of the first cable to the positive (+) terminal of the flat battery (lift the terminal cover first).
  2. Connect the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the donor battery.
  3. Connect the second cable to the negative (−) terminal of the donor battery.
  4. Make the final connection to a bare metal ground point on the Outlander’s engine, as far from the battery as possible — not the flat battery’s negative terminal (the gas near the battery can ignite).
  5. Start the donor car, let it idle a few minutes, then start the Outlander.

Once it’s running, remove the cables in the exact reverse order (4 → 3 → 2 → 1).

Don’t Push- or Tow-Start It

Never bump-start the Outlander — it can cause an accident and damage the vehicle, and the automatic can’t be started that way. Use jumper cables only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the last (negative) clip go on an Outlander?

To a clean, unpainted metal ground point on the engine, well away from the battery — never the flat battery’s negative post. That keeps sparks clear of battery gases.

My Outlander is stuck in Park after going flat — why?

The electric park-lock loses power with a dead battery. Jump-starting usually frees it; if not, use the emergency gear-selector release.

Can I use a lithium jump pack?

Yes — any 12 V pack works. Follow the same order and clip the negative to an engine ground, not the battery.

It started, then went flat again — now what?

The battery isn’t holding charge or the alternator isn’t charging. Drive to recharge; if it repeats, have the battery and charging system tested.

If a warning light stays on after the jump, look the code up on autodtcs.com. To disconnect the battery safely, see our Outlander battery guide.
