The maintenance reminder on the first-generation Subaru XV (GP, 2012–2017) is cleared from the driver’s seat using the brake pedal together with the rear-demister and parking-light switches — no diagnostic tool is needed. Do it right after an oil and filter change so the counter matches the work.
The sequence is timing-sensitive: once you start, each switch action has to follow the one before it within about four seconds, and the whole on/off block is done twice.
How to reset the Subaru XV service reminder
- Put the gearbox in neutral and apply the parking brake.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Press and hold the brake pedal down.
- Turn the rear-window demister on, then within four seconds turn the parking lights on.
- Within four seconds turn the rear-window demister off, then within four seconds turn the parking lights off.
- Repeat that demister-and-lights on/off block once more.
- Release the brake pedal. The service light flashes for about five seconds to confirm the reset was accepted.
- Let the engine idle for 30 seconds, then switch it off and wait 40 seconds before restarting.
If the reminder is still showing, the timing was likely missed on one of the steps — switch off, wait, and run the whole sequence again from the start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an OBD scanner to reset the XV service light?
No. On the GP generation the reminder is cleared with the on-board button sequence above. A scan tool is only needed if a warning light is caused by a stored fault code rather than the service counter.
Why does the service light keep coming back?
If it returns immediately, the reset sequence did not register — the four-second windows are easy to miss. If it returns after some driving, the mileage interval has genuinely elapsed again, or an actual fault is present.
Is the service reminder the same as a fault warning?
No. The spanner/maintenance reminder is a time- and distance-based service prompt. A separate warning lamp (engine, brakes, AWD) points to a system fault and will not clear with this procedure.
