Put the Car in Tow Mode

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 1, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Tesla Model S (2012-2021).
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If your Tesla Model S (2012–2021) has to be winched onto a flatbed or rolled a short distance, it must be in Tow (Transport) Mode — otherwise the parking brakes stay locked and the wheels won’t turn.

How to put a Model S in Tow Mode

  1. Shift into Park and press the brake pedal.
  2. On the touchscreen, open Controls > Settings > Service & Reset > Tow Mode (newer software may list it under Controls > Service > Towing).
  3. Switch Tow Mode ON and confirm.
  4. The car releases its parking brakes and can be rolled slowly (walking pace at most) or winched onto a flatbed.

Important: Tow Mode needs working 12 V power — a completely dead car can’t enable it from the screen, so restore 12 V first. On air-suspension cars the vehicle may rise to a towing height. The mode cancels if you shift back to Park on the touchscreen, and the Model S should always be transported on a flatbed rather than towed on its wheels.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my Model S roll onto the truck?
Without Tow Mode the parking brakes hold the wheels. Switch it on via Controls > Settings > Service & Reset (or Controls > Service > Towing) so the car free-rolls.

Can I activate Tow Mode with a dead battery?
No — it needs 12 V power for the touchscreen. Restore 12 V power first, then enable it.

If a drivetrain, air-suspension or brake warning is involved, you can look up the fault code on autodtcs.com.
