If the Audi Q5 (FY/80A, 2017–present) has a flat battery or fault, the S tronic gear selector can stay locked in P and the car won’t roll. There’s a manual release under the driver’s-side floor, using the small tool stored in the boot.
How to Release the Q5 (FY) Selector from Park
- Apply the parking brake or chock the wheels — the car can roll once the lock releases.
- Take the emergency release tool from its holder in the luggage compartment.
- Lift the driver’s-side floor mat and remove the cover plug to expose the release.
- Fit the tool into the opening, turn it 90° clockwise and press until it engages.
- Move the gear selector out of P. The car can now be pushed or trailered.
- Refit the plug, mat and tool when you’re done.
Before You Start
- Secure the car first — once P is released the transmission no longer holds it, so chock the wheels or set the handbrake.
- If the battery is simply flat, charging or jump-starting it usually restores normal selector operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my Q5 come out of Park?
The shift-lock is electric; with no power or a fault it stays locked. The manual release lets you move the selector so the car can be recovered.
Where is the release tool?
In the luggage compartment, usually with the tool kit. The release point itself is under the driver’s-side floor mat beneath a cover plug.
If the selector fault comes with a warning or code, look it up on autodtcs.com.
