A “key battery low” message or a weak remote on the Audi Q5 (FY/80A, 2017–present) usually just needs a fresh CR2032 coin cell. It’s a two-minute job with no tools.
How to Replace the Q5 (FY) Key Fob Battery
- Press and hold the small catch on the fob and pull out the mechanical emergency key.
- With the key removed, slide off the button-cell cover from the fob.
- Lift out the old CR2032 coin cell.
- Fit the new cell with the positive (+) side facing down, as the old one sat.
- Refit the cover and push the mechanical key back in until it clicks.
- Check the remote locks and unlocks the car.
Notes
- Use a good-quality CR2032 — cheap cells can read “low” again quickly.
- Avoid touching the flat faces of the new battery; skin oils shorten its life.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Audi Q5 (FY) key take?
A single CR2032 3V coin cell, fitted positive-side down.
Do I need to reprogram the key afterwards?
No — changing the battery doesn’t affect programming. Programming a new key needs Audi diagnostic equipment, so that’s a dealer or auto-locksmith job.
Remote still dead with a new battery — can I still drive?
Yes. Use the emergency key blade to get in, then hold the fob against the start button (or the marked spot) to start, and have the fob checked.
