Check the Automatic Transmission Fluid

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 6, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda CR-V Mk3 (RE) 2007-2012.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The automatic Honda CR-V (RE, 2007-2012) has a transmission dipstick, so you can check the fluid level yourself. Honda specifies ATF-Z1 fluid; the system holds roughly 2.5 litres at a refill.

Check the ATF level

  1. Warm the transmission to operating temperature by driving, then park on level ground.
  2. With the engine at idle and the parking brake on, move the selector through all positions and back to P.
  3. Turn the engine off, then within about 60-90 seconds pull the transmission dipstick (separate from the yellow engine-oil dipstick).
  4. Wipe it, reinsert fully, and withdraw again. The level should sit between the upper and lower marks.
  5. Top up in small amounts through the dipstick tube with Honda ATF-Z1 if low, rechecking as you go. Do not overfill.

Dark or burnt-smelling fluid, or a low level that keeps returning, points to a service or a leak.

Frequently asked questions

Engine running or off when I read it? On Honda automatics you check shortly after switching the warm engine off, not while it runs.

Can I use any ATF? Use Honda ATF-Z1 (or the approved equivalent). The wrong fluid can cause shudder and poor shifting.
