The dashboard of the Suzuki Vitara (LY, 2015–2024) uses the same warning lights across the range. When one stays on after you start the engine, it is telling you something — and the color is the first clue: red means stop and check now, amber means a system needs attention soon. Here is what the Vitara’s lights mean and what to do.

Red lights — stop and check now
- Oil pressure (oil-can): if it comes on with the engine running, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off — low oil pressure can wreck the engine in minutes. Check the oil level before restarting.
- Charging / battery (battery symbol): the battery is not being charged. Suspect the alternator or drive belt; you may only have a short time before the engine stops.
- Brake system (circle with “!” / “BRAKE”): first check the parking brake is fully off. If it stays on, the brake-fluid level is low or there is a brake fault — do not keep driving.
- Airbag / SRS: a fault in the airbag or seatbelt-pretensioner system. The airbags may not deploy in a crash — have it checked.
- Seat belt: a belt is not fastened.
- Power steering (steering wheel with “!”): if red, the electric power steering has a fault and the wheel may suddenly feel heavy.
Amber lights — attention soon
- Check engine (engine outline): an engine-management or emissions fault is stored. It can be anything from a loose fuel cap to a sensor — have the code read.
- ABS: the anti-lock braking system has switched off; normal braking still works, but you lose ABS. If this and the red brake light are both on, stop — braking may be affected.
- ESP OFF: the stability program has been turned off (by the switch) or has a fault. Press the ESP OFF switch to re-enable it.
- Low tire pressure (TPMS): one or more tires is low. Check and reset — see our Vitara tire pressures & TPMS reset guide.
- Glow plug (coil symbol, diesel): on the 1.6 DDiS, wait for it to go out before cranking. If it flashes while driving, there is a diesel-system fault.
- DPF / exhaust (diesel): the particulate filter needs regeneration — a longer steady drive usually clears it.
- Hill descent control, Dual Sensor Brake Support, low fuel and door open are information lights, not faults.

What to do when a light comes on
Note the color and whether it is steady or flashing. A flashing red light, or the oil or temperature warning, means stop as soon as it is safe. A steady amber light means you can usually drive on gently but should get it looked at. If the check-engine light is on, reading the stored fault code tells you how urgent it is before you spend money at a garage.

Frequently asked questions
Why is a warning light still on after I start the Vitara?
Lights that stay on after start-up are reporting a live condition or fault — they are not a service countdown. Fix the underlying issue and the light goes out.
Which Vitara lights mean stop immediately?
Red oil-pressure, charging, brake, and any flashing red light. Pull over safely and switch off.
My ESP OFF light is on — is that a fault?
Usually not — the stability system has been switched off. Press the ESP OFF button to turn it back on. If it stays on with the system enabled, have it checked.
