These instructions apply to the Mazda 2 Mk3 (DJ/DL) 2015-2022.

If your Mazda 2 (DJ, 2015–2022) won’t crank and the dash is dim or dead, a flat 12V battery is the usual cause. The battery sits in the engine bay under a plastic cover, and you jump it directly at its own terminals — this generation has no separate remote jump posts. Work in the order below, and use a 12V donor only.
Before You Start
- Use a 12V donor battery or pack only. Never use a 24V supply (two 12V batteries in series) — it will damage the starter, ignition and electronics.
- Both cars in park/neutral, ignition off, parking brakes on, not touching each other.
- Open the hood and lift off the battery cover to reach the positive (+) and negative (−) terminals.
- Don’t jump a battery that is frozen or visibly low on electrolyte.
- Keep the leads clear of the cooling fan and belts.
How to Jump-Start the Mazda 2
- Connect one red (+) clamp to the positive terminal of the flat battery.
- Connect the other red (+) clamp to the positive terminal of the donor battery.
- Connect one black (−) clamp to the negative terminal of the donor battery.
- Connect the last black (−) clamp to a bare metal ground point on the flat car — a bolt or bracket on the engine, away from the battery. Do not clamp it to the flat battery’s negative terminal (spark/explosion risk).
- Start the donor car and let it run for a few minutes.
- Start the flat car. Once it’s running, remove the clamps in the reverse order (chassis ground, donor −, donor +, flat +).
- Refit the battery cover. Drive or idle for 20–30 minutes to put charge back.
After a Jump-Start
A fully flat or disconnected battery makes the Mazda 2 forget a few learned settings. Once it’s running you may need to:
- Re-initialise the TPMS — set the pressures and hold the SET switch (see our Mazda 2 tire pressures & TPMS reset guide).
- Re-set the one-touch power windows — the auto up/down may stop working until re-initialised.
- Expect i-stop (Auto Start-Stop) to stay off for a while — it re-enables once the battery has recovered enough charge.
- Re-enable Blind Spot Monitoring if it switched off.
If the battery goes flat again within a day or two, it’s failing or there’s a parasitic drain — load-test it and replace if it’s more than about five years old.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a Mazda 2 (DJ)?
In the engine bay, under a removable plastic cover. Both petrol (SKYACTIV-G) and diesel (SKYACTIV-D) Mazda 2s have the 12V battery there — there’s no boot or under-seat battery on this model.
Can I jump-start an i-stop Mazda 2 normally?
Yes. The jump-start procedure is the same; i-stop simply won’t operate until the battery is properly charged again. If you replace the battery, fit the correct i-stop-rated type so Auto Start-Stop keeps working.
Why won’t my Mazda 2 start even after a jump?
If it still won’t crank, the battery terminals may be corroded, the clamp contact poor, or the starter/charging system at fault. If it cranks but won’t fire, that’s a different fault — scan for codes and look them up at autodtcs.com.
