Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota Corolla Mk11 (E170) 2014-2019.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2014–2019 Toyota Corolla you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Reconnect positive first, negative last and tighten both.
  5. Reset the clock and audio; the TPMS re-initializes on the next drive.

FAQ

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last.

What resets afterward?

If your Corolla stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
