These instructions apply to the Kia Rio (UB, QBR) 2011 - 2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.
If the remote control on your Kia Rio (2011–2018) stops working or the range is reduced, the most likely cause is a weak key fob battery. Replacing the coin cell battery is quick and can be done at home with simple tools.
When to Replace
- Remote locking/unlocking works intermittently or only at close range.
- The LED indicator on the fob (if equipped) no longer lights up.
- After a vehicle battery replacement, if the remote doesn’t respond even after re-syncing.
What You Need
- New CR2032 coin cell battery (check your fob type).
- Small flat-head screwdriver or plastic trim tool.
Replacement Procedure
- Remove the mechanical key by pressing the release button and pulling it out.
- Insert a flat tool into the slot on the fob case and gently twist to separate the halves.
- Note the battery orientation before removal (positive side facing up).
- Remove the old battery and insert the new one in the same orientation.
- Snap the fob halves back together and reinsert the mechanical key.
- Test the remote functions (lock/unlock and, if fitted, trunk release).

Troubleshooting
- If the remote still doesn’t work, check the battery orientation.
- Always use a fresh battery from a sealed package — old stock may already be weak.
- If replacing the battery doesn’t help, try reprogramming the remote or check for a faulty fob.
