The Kia Rio (2011–2018) with the A4CF1 4-speed automatic transmission requires the correct fluid level to ensure smooth shifting and long life. This unit does not have a traditional dipstick — fluid checks and refills are done through a check plug. This DIY guide explains how to drain, refill, and verify the ATF level safely.
What You Need
- Socket and spanner set
- Drain pan (minimum 5 L capacity)
- Funnel with hose or fluid pump
- New crush washer for the drain plug
- Genuine Kia ATF SP-III or approved equivalent (about 4.0 L for a drain and fill)
- Gloves and eye protection
Draining the Fluid
- Warm up the engine with a short drive to thin the fluid, then switch ignition OFF.
- Raise the car securely on stands and place the drain pan under the transmission.
- Remove the transmission drain plug and washer, and allow the fluid to drain completely.
- Refit the plug with a new washer and tighten to the specified torque (~40 Nm).
Refilling the Fluid
- Locate the ATF fill plug on top of the transmission.
- Remove the plug and insert a funnel with hose or use a pump.
- Add 3.5–4.0 L of Kia ATF SP-III.
- Reinstall the fill plug loosely for now.
Checking Fluid Level
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Move the gear selector slowly through all positions (P → R → N → D → back to P), pausing for 2–3 seconds in each.
- With the engine idling and transmission warmed to ~50–60 °C, remove the check plug on the side of the transmission.
- If a small trickle of ATF runs out, the level is correct. If not, add fluid through the fill plug until it dribbles from the check plug.
- Reinstall and tighten the check plug.
Maintenance Notes
- Replace the ATF every 60,000 km (37,000 miles) under severe conditions, or as recommended by Kia.
- Only use ATF SP-III or approved equivalent — mixing fluids can cause shifting issues.
- Inspect fluid color: clean fluid is red; dark or burnt fluid indicates overdue maintenance.
- Dispose of used ATF properly at a recycling facility.
