Replace a Headlight Bulb

A blown headlight bulb on the Kia Rio Mk3 (UB, 2011–2018) is a quick DIY change from the engine bay — no bumper or headlight removal needed on most trims. The bulb type depends on your market, so check the table below before buying.

Which Headlight Bulb Does the Rio Use?

The Rio UB uses different front bulbs in Europe and the US:

LightEuropeUS
Low beamH7 (55W)H11B (55W)
High beamH1 (55W)H11B (55W)
Front fog9006 / HB4 (55W)9006 / HB4 (55W)
Front turn signalPY21W (amber)PY21W (amber)

In Europe the low and high beam are separate bulbs (H7 and H1); on US cars a single H11B serves both. Always confirm against the bulb already fitted.

How to Replace a Headlight Bulb

  1. Switch the lights and ignition off, open the hood and find the back of the headlight unit.
  2. Unclip the rubber dust cover on the back of the housing for the beam you’re changing.
  3. Unplug the connector, release the wire spring clip (or twist the bulb holder a quarter-turn), and lift the old bulb out.
  4. Fit the new bulb without touching the glass — skin oil creates a hot spot that shortens its life. Handle it by the metal base; if you touch the glass, wipe it with alcohol.
  5. Refit the clip/holder, reconnect the plug and press the dust cover back on fully. Test the light before closing the hood.

Replace bulbs in pairs if you can — when one beam fails, the other is usually near the end of its life, and matched bulbs keep both sides the same brightness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What bulb does the Kia Rio take for the headlight?

In Europe: H7 low beam and H1 high beam. In the US: H11B for both. Front fog lights are 9006 (HB4) in both markets.

Can I replace the bulb myself?

Yes — on most Rio trims you reach the bulb from behind the headlight in the engine bay, with no tools. A few higher trims are tighter and you may need to free the washer bottle or move the air intake.

Why shouldn’t I touch the glass?

Oil from your fingers burns onto the hot glass and creates a hot spot that can fail the bulb early. Hold it by the base, and clean any fingerprints with rubbing alcohol before fitting.

If a bulb-out or lighting warning stays on after the change, you can look the fault code up on autodtcs.com.
