Jump-Start a Flat Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 5, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Kia Rio Mk3 (UB/QBR) 2011-2018.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If your Kia Rio Mk3 (UB, 2011–2018) won’t start and only clicks or cranks slowly, the 12 V battery is most likely flat. The battery sits in the engine bay, and you can jump-start the car from a donor vehicle in a few minutes with a set of jumper cables.

How to Jump-Start the Kia Rio

  1. Park the donor car close (not touching), both engines off, both parking brakes on. Turn off lights and accessories on both cars.
  2. Connect one red (+) clamp to the flat battery’s positive (+) terminal, and the other red clamp to the donor battery’s positive (+).
  3. Connect one black (−) clamp to the donor battery’s negative (−) terminal.
  4. Connect the last black (−) clamp to a bare metal ground on the Rio’s engine (a bracket or lifting eye) — not to the flat battery’s negative post. This keeps any spark away from battery gases.
  5. Start the donor car and let it run a couple of minutes, then start the Rio. If it won’t turn over, wait and try again — don’t crank for more than about 10 seconds at a time.
  6. Once it’s running, remove the cables in the reverse order (black from the Rio engine, black from the donor, then the two reds). Then drive for at least 20–30 minutes to recharge the battery.

If the Rio goes flat again soon after, the battery or charging system needs testing — a jump-start only gets you going, it doesn’t fix a worn-out battery.

Diesel Stop-Start (ISG) Cars

The 1.1 and 1.4 CRDi diesels with stop-start (ISG) use a special AGM battery. You can jump-start them exactly as above, but always replace the battery with the correct AGM type — fitting an ordinary battery upsets the stop-start system and shortens its life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on a Kia Rio?

In the engine bay, toward the front corner. It’s a standard 12 V battery (an AGM type on stop-start diesels).

Where do I connect the negative clamp?

To a bare metal point on the engine of the flat car — not to the dead battery’s negative terminal. This keeps sparks away from the battery.

My Rio keeps going flat — what’s wrong?

Either the battery is worn out, something is draining it when parked, or the alternator isn’t charging. Have the battery and charging system tested rather than repeatedly jump-starting.

If a battery or charging warning light is on as well, you can look the fault code up on autodtcs.com.
