Initialize the Power Windows

The power windows on the Opel Zafira Tourer (P12) 2011–2019 rely on a learned end-stop position to enable the one-touch (express) auto-up and auto-down functions. When the battery is disconnected — for replacement, electrical work, or extended storage — the window control modules lose that position memory. You can still raise and lower the glass by holding the switch, but a single tap won’t run the window all the way up or down until the modules are re-initialised. The procedure is door-by-door and takes about a minute per window.

When Window Initialisation Is Needed

• After a battery disconnect or replacement.
• After replacing a window regulator, motor, or door wiring loom.
• If the auto-up / auto-down (one-touch) function stops working — i.e. a brief tap on the switch no longer moves the window through its full travel.
• After a power-window fuse blows and is replaced.
• If the anti-pinch protection trips during normal operation (window reverses without an obstruction).

Before You Start

• Park the vehicle on a level surface with the engine off.
• Close all four doors completely. The body control module disables window auto-functions while a door is ajar.
• Check that each window channel is clear — no fingers, no ice in winter, no debris in the rubber seal at the top of the door frame.
• Make sure the cabin temperature is reasonable. In freezing conditions the rubber seals stiffen and the motor may current-limit before reaching the true end stop.

Tools and Supplies

None. The procedure uses only the door-mounted window switches. No scan tool, no fuses to pull.

Power Window Initialisation — Step-by-Step

Repeat the sequence below separately for the driver’s window first, then the front passenger window, then each rear window.

1. Switch the ignition to ON (engine off is fine).
2. Press and hold the window switch in the UP / close position.
3. Keep holding the switch until the window is fully closed against the top seal.
4. Continue holding for a further 2 seconds after the window has stopped moving — this tells the control module where the true end stop is.
5. Release the switch.
6. Press and hold the switch in the DOWN / open position.
7. Keep holding until the window is fully open inside the door.
8. Continue holding for a further 2 seconds after the window has stopped.
9. Release the switch.
10. Move on to the next window and repeat.

Once all four windows have completed the sequence, the auto-up and auto-down functions should be restored.

Verify the Initialisation Worked

Test the auto function on each window with a brief tap (not a hold) on the switch — the glass should travel the full length on its own. If a window stops part-way and waits for another input, repeat the procedure for that specific window only.

Troubleshooting

• Window reverses partway up. The anti-pinch system thinks there’s an obstruction. Inspect the rubber seal and the channel for grit, ice, or worn weather strip. Clean the rail, lubricate the rubber with a silicone-based seal protector (not WD-40 — petroleum will damage the rubber), and retry.
• The driver’s window works but the passenger windows don’t auto-function. On most Zafira Tourer trims, only the driver’s window has one-touch up; passenger windows often have one-touch down only or no one-touch at all. Check your trim’s specification before assuming a fault.
• None of the windows responds after the battery reconnect. Check the F31 power-window fuse in the engine-bay fuse box. The Zafira Tourer also has a window-lockout button on the driver’s door — make sure it’s not engaged.
• Initialisation works briefly then resets after the next ignition cycle. Indicates a fault in the door control module (DCM) — a scan-tool read of body-CAN codes will identify the affected door. This is no longer a calibration issue and needs further diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to initialise every window or just the driver’s?

Initialise each window that has lost its memory. In practice that usually means all four, because a battery disconnect affects every door control module. There’s no harm in re-initialising windows that don’t need it.

How long does the procedure take?

About 30–60 seconds per window, so 2–4 minutes for all four. If a window requires several retries it will take longer.

Will this fix a window that physically won’t move?

No. Initialisation only re-teaches end-stop positions to a working window. If the motor is dead, the regulator cable is broken, or the switch is failed, the window won’t move and you have a mechanical or electrical fault that’s separate from the calibration. Test by trying to hold the switch — if nothing happens at all, this guide isn’t your answer.

I disconnected the battery for 10 seconds. Do I still need to do this?

Probably yes. Even a brief disconnect on the Zafira Tourer is enough to drop the window control modules out of memory. If your one-touch functions still work after a short disconnect you got lucky — but if they’re acting up, run the initialisation.
