When the spanner (service) symbol or a “Service Required” message appears in your Kia Niro Mk1 (DE, 2016–2022) — hybrid, plug-in or e-Niro — it just means the service interval has elapsed. After the work is done the reminder is cleared from the instrument-cluster menu in a few seconds. This guide shows the exact steps, no tools or dealer visit needed.
Before You Start
Only reset the indicator once the service has actually been done. Clearing it early just hides the reminder while the oil and filters keep ageing. The reset is done through the cluster’s User Settings menu using the steering-wheel buttons.
How to Reset the Niro Mk1 Service Indicator
- Turn the ignition on (on a hybrid, press START twice without your foot on the brake so the dash powers up but the car stays in “ready off”).
- Press the ‘MENU’ button on the steering wheel repeatedly until ‘User Settings’ appears on the display.
- Press ‘OK’, then scroll through the menu and select ‘Service Interval’ (it may sit under a Service or Maintenance sub-menu).
- Select ‘Reset’.
- Press ‘OK’ to confirm — the service indicator resets to the full interval and the spanner clears.
Some early Niro clusters instead use a trip/reset button: with the ignition on, hold the trip-reset button on the cluster or stalk until the service display flashes and resets. If your car has no User Settings entry for the service interval, use that method.
If the Reminder Comes Straight Back
- It reappears at start-up: the reset wasn’t confirmed — repeat and make sure you press OK on ‘Reset’.
- A separate warning light is on: that’s a fault, not the service timer — the service reset won’t clear a genuine fault code.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the engine need to run to reset the Niro service light?
No. On a hybrid you don’t even need the system “ready” — just power the dash up (ignition/ACC on) and use the menu.
Where is the Service Interval option?
In the cluster’s User Settings menu, reached with the steering-wheel MENU button. Wording varies slightly by trim.
Will resetting affect anything else?
No — it only restarts the service-interval countdown. Nothing else is changed.
The light stays on after resetting — why?
If it’s the spanner symbol, the reset wasn’t confirmed. A different warning (engine, hybrid system) is a fault needing diagnosis, not a service reset.
If a warning light appeared alongside the service message, look up the code on autodtcs.com. After any battery work, see our Niro Mk1 12V battery guide.
