Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Renault Clio Mk5 (XJA) 2019-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

If the remote on your Renault Clio Mk5 (XJA, 2019–present) is getting weak — short range, fiddly keyless entry, or a “key battery low” message — the coin cell needs renewing. The Clio came with two remote types: a flip key and a hands-free keycard, and they take different cells, so check yours first. This guide covers both.

Which Cell Your Remote Takes

  • Flip key (blade folds out): a small coin cell, commonly a CR1620 (some use CR2016) — read the marking on the old one.
  • Hands-free keycard (flat card you keep in your pocket): a CR2032.

The golden rule either way: match the number printed on the cell you remove.

How to Replace the Cell

  1. Flip key: release/fold out the emergency blade, then prise or slide the cover off with a small screwdriver. Keycard: slide off the rear cover (some have a small release notch).
  2. Use a small screwdriver to lever out the old cell, noting which way up it sits.
  3. Fit the new cell the same way round, handling it by the edges.
  4. Refit the cover (and blade), then test lock/unlock from a normal distance.

Does It Need Programming?

No — the swap doesn’t touch the remote’s pairing, so it works straight away. A lost or extra key/card can only be ordered and coded by a Renault dealer, which isn’t an owner job.

If It Still Won’t Work

Re-open it and check the cell orientation and clean contacts. With the keycard, you can still start the car by holding it against the marked reader (or in the card slot, depending on trim) and pressing start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Renault Clio Mk5 key take?

The flip key usually takes a CR1620 (some CR2016); the hands-free keycard takes a CR2032. Always check the old cell.

Will the car still start with a dead remote?

Yes — the flip key works in the ignition; the keycard starts the car when held against the marked reader, then press start.

Do I need to re-pair it?

No — pairing is unaffected. Just refit and test.

Can I program a spare card myself?

No — Renault key coding needs the dealer system. Only the battery swap is owner-doable.
