Seeing the spanner or a “Service” message on your Renault Captur Mk2 (XJB, 2020–present)? It means the oil-service counter has reached zero. You don’t need a garage to clear it — the Captur uses the same tidy wiper-stalk menu as its Clio sister car. Do the oil and filter first, then follow the steps below.

On the second-generation Captur, the service reminder is a maintenance prompt rather than a warning of anything wrong. The instrument cluster runs an oil-service counter that measures both the distance driven and the time elapsed since the last reset. When that counter runs out, the car greets you with the spanner symbol and a “Service” message. The engine is fine; the display is simply asking for the routine oil and filter change to be booked in or carried out.

What the Service Message Means

The Captur’s reminder is interval-based: it counts down whichever limit — distance or time — arrives first, then lights up. Because it works from a counter and not from the condition of the oil itself, it cannot detect that fresh oil has gone in. It will keep displaying until you tell it the service has been done, which is exactly what the reset does. A steady spanner alongside the “Service” text is the normal maintenance prompt. An amber or red engine or oil symbol is a different thing entirely — that indicates a fault and will not clear through the service menu.

Only Reset After the Oil Is Changed

The counter just tracks distance and time since the last reset — it has no idea how old the oil actually is. Reset it only once fresh oil and a new filter are in, so the next interval starts from the right place. A few things to have ready first:

  • Park on level ground with the parking brake applied.
  • Turn the ignition on but leave the engine off — that is the state the reset expects.
  • No scan tool or workshop kit is required; everything happens from the wiper-stalk controls.
  • Locate the small buttons on the end of the wiper stalk before you start so the menu steps flow without fumbling.

How to Reset the Captur Mk2 Oil Service

  1. Turn the ignition on, but don’t start the engine.
  2. Using the scroll button (1) on the wiper stalk, step through to the ‘Vehicle’ menu.
  3. Confirm with button (2) or (3).
  4. Choose ‘Mileage before oil service’.
  5. Hold the ‘OK’ button for 10 seconds — the display jumps back to the full distance to the next service.
  6. Switch the ignition off to finish.

On Captur trims with the EASY LINK touchscreen, the reset can also sit in the on-screen vehicle/service menu.

The Captur keeps two maintenance counters: the ‘Mileage before oil service’ reset above, and a separate ‘Mileage before service’ for the general inspection. After an oil change you normally clear both — repeat the same steps but choose ‘Mileage before service’ at the menu. Only reset the oil counter once the oil has actually been changed.

If It Won’t Reset

If the distance-to-service figure doesn’t jump back to full, run through these points:

  • Let go of OK early — the full 10-second hold is what registers it; repeat and be patient until the value resets.
  • Wrong menu line — make sure ‘Mileage before oil service’ is the item on screen when you hold OK, not the trip or another readout.
  • Engine running — the reset expects ignition on with the engine off; start it and the counter won’t clear.
  • Cycle the ignition off and on and try the sequence again from the start if the first attempt does nothing.
  • Another warning is lit — an amber engine/oil light is a fault, not the service timer, and won’t clear here.

Once the Reset Is Done

Once the hold registers, the ‘Mileage before oil service’ readout returns to the full interval and the spanner goes out. Switch off, and at the next ignition-on the service message should be gone. There is no drive cycle to complete — the counter simply begins again. If the spanner reappears after a restart, the hold most likely didn’t complete, so run the sequence once more.

Reset Frequency

Reset the oil-service counter once each time the oil and filter are changed — no more often than that. The Captur’s exact service interval varies by engine and how the car is driven, so instead of relying on a fixed figure, follow the schedule in your own vehicle handbook and reset at the point the work is done. Keeping the reset tied to the actual service is what keeps the reminder meaningful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the service reset on the Captur Mk2?

In the dashboard menu via the wiper-stalk buttons: Vehicle → Mileage before oil service → hold OK 10 s. On EASY LINK touchscreen cars it may also appear in the on-screen vehicle/service menu.

Do I need a scan tool?

No — the stalk buttons and the ignition are all you need. There is no OBD adapter or dealer visit required for the oil-service reset.

Engine on or off?

Ignition on, engine off — that’s the position the reset uses. Starting the engine stops the sequence from registering.

The spanner returned — why?

The 10-second hold didn’t complete, or OK was released too soon. Repeat and keep OK held until the full distance to the next service appears.

Does resetting fix the reason the light came on?

No. The reset only clears the reminder. The oil and filter change is the actual service — do that first, then reset so the counter starts fresh.

Is the Captur reset the same as the Clio?

The menu route is the same family of wiper-stalk controls, so the steps read almost identically. Follow the exact menu labels shown on your own car’s display.

If a warning light showed alongside the service message, look it up on autodtcs.com. After battery work, see our Captur Mk2 battery guide.
