A weak remote on your Renault Captur Mk2 (XJB, 2020–present) — short range, hesitant keyless entry, or a “key battery low” message — means the coin cell is due for renewal. The Captur came with either a flip key or a hands-free keycard, and they take different cells, so identify yours before you buy. Both swaps are quick and need no programming.
Which Cell You Need
- Flip key (folding blade): usually a CR1620 (some use CR2016) — check the old cell.
- Hands-free keycard (pocket card): a CR2032.
Whatever you have, match the number on the cell you take out.
How to Replace the Cell
- Flip key: pop out the emergency blade, then prise/slide the case open with a small screwdriver. Keycard: slide the rear cover off (look for the small release notch).
- Lever the old cell out with a small screwdriver, noting which way up it sits.
- Fit the new cell the same way round, by the edges.
- Close the case (refit the blade) and test lock/unlock from a normal distance.
Does It Need Programming?
No — the battery swap doesn’t affect pairing, so the remote works at once. A lost or extra key/card can only be ordered and coded by a Renault dealer.
If It Still Won’t Work
Re-open it, check the orientation and clean the contacts. With the keycard you can still start by holding it against the marked reader (or in the slot) and pressing start.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Captur Mk2 key use?
The flip key takes a CR1620 (some CR2016); the keycard takes a CR2032. Check the old cell.
Will the car start with a flat remote?
Yes — the flip key works in the ignition; the keycard starts the car when held against the marked reader.
Re-pairing needed?
No — pairing is unaffected; just refit and test.
Can I program a spare myself?
No — Renault key coding needs the dealer system. Only the battery swap is DIY.
