Enable or Disable the Stop & Start System

These instructions apply to the Renault Captur Mk2 (XJB) 2020-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

The Renault Captur Mk2 (XJB, 2020–present) has a Stop & Start system that shuts the engine off at a standstill to save fuel. If you’d rather keep it running in slow traffic, switching it off takes one button press — here’s how, plus the normal reasons it sometimes won’t stop the engine.

How It Works on the Captur

Come to a stop in neutral with the clutch up (manual) or on the brake (EDC auto) and the engine cuts; dip the clutch or lift the brake and it restarts. It only works once the engine is warm and the battery is healthy. The E-Tech hybrid handles engine on/off itself as part of the hybrid drive.

Switching It Off

  1. With the engine running, press the Stop & Start button — the “A” in a circular arrow, on the dash or console.
  2. The warning light comes on to confirm it’s off, and the engine idles normally at a stop.

Switching It Back On

Press the button again, or just restart the car — Stop & Start defaults back on at every ignition cycle. There’s no setting to make it stay off.

Why It Sometimes Won’t Cut the Engine

  • The engine isn’t warm, or the climate system needs the engine for heating/cooling/demist.
  • The battery charge is low — common after short trips or a battery change; auto-stop is blocked to protect it.
  • You’re on a slope, the wheel is turned, or you haven’t fully stopped.

If it stopped working after a battery change, let the battery charge fully — see our Captur Mk2 battery guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Captur remember Stop & Start off?

No — it comes back on at every start; there’s no permanent-off setting.

Is the stopping and starting bad for the engine?

No — the Captur’s starter and battery are built for it, and it skips stops when conditions aren’t right.

Why won’t the engine auto-stop?

Usually a cold engine, low battery, or the climate system needing the engine.

The Stop & Start light is on — fault?

If you pressed the button it just shows it’s disabled. If you didn’t, it usually points to battery condition — check it if it persists.

If a warning light appeared alongside the fault, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear a service reminder, see our Captur Mk2 service reset guide.
