A weak key fob on your Ford Fiesta Mk8 (2017–2023) — short range, fussy keyless entry, or a “key battery low” message — is a quick coin-cell fix. The Fiesta fob takes a CR2032 and opens with the emergency blade hidden inside. No programming needed; here’s how.
What You’ll Need
- A fresh CR2032 3 V lithium coin cell.
- The metal emergency key inside the fob, plus a small flat screwdriver.
How to Replace the Fiesta Mk8 Key Battery
- Slide out the emergency key blade (release the catch on the back of the fob).
- Insert a small screwdriver into the slot the blade leaves and gently split the case / lift the cover.
- Lift out the old CR2032, noting which way up it sits (positive side up).
- Fit the new cell the same way, handling it by the edges.
- Click the case back together and slide the blade home.
- Test lock/unlock and keyless entry from a normal distance.
Does It Need Programming?
No — the swap doesn’t affect the fob’s pairing, so it works straight away. A new or spare key can only be programmed with Ford diagnostic equipment — that part isn’t a DIY job.
If It Still Won’t Respond
Re-open the fob and check the cell orientation and clean the contacts. If keyless entry is slow, hold the fob against the start button to start (Ford marks the backup spot), then it re-syncs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Ford Fiesta Mk8 key use?
A single CR2032 3 V lithium coin cell.
Will the car still start with a dead key battery?
Yes — hold the fob against the start button to start on the backup transponder, and use the emergency blade (behind the door-handle cap) to unlock.
Which way up does the cell go?
Positive (+) side up, matching the cell you removed.
My remote still won’t work with a new cell — is the fob dead?
Check orientation and contacts first. If it’s still unresponsive, the fob may have an internal fault and need replacing and programming at a dealer.
