Your Vauxhall Astra Mk8 (L, 2022–present) has a Stop & Start system that switches the engine off at a standstill to save fuel. If you’d rather keep it running in slow traffic, it’s easy to turn off. Here’s how, and why it sometimes won’t stop the engine. (The electric Astra has no engine, so this doesn’t apply.)
How It Works on the Astra
Brake to a stop (automatic) or stop, select neutral and release the clutch (manual), and the engine cuts; lift the brake or dip the clutch and it restarts. It only operates once the engine is warm and the battery is healthy.
How to Switch It Off
- If your Astra has the physical “A”-in-a-circular-arrow button, press it once — a dash light confirms it’s off.
- Otherwise, open the touchscreen, select ‘Driving functions’, then ‘Stop & Start’ — the warning light should come on to confirm.
How to Switch It Back On
Press the button again (or re-enable it in the menu), or simply restart the car — Stop & Start defaults back on at every ignition cycle.
Why It Sometimes Won’t Activate
- The engine isn’t warm yet, or the climate system is demanding heating/cooling/demist.
- The battery charge is low — common after short trips or a battery change; auto-stop is blocked to protect the battery.
- You’re on a slope, the steering is turned, or you haven’t fully stopped.
If it stopped working after a battery change, the battery may need a full charge or registering — see our Astra Mk8 battery guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Astra remember my Stop & Start setting?
No — it resets to on at every start. There’s no factory option to keep it off.
Is it bad to keep using Stop & Start?
No — the Astra’s reinforced starter and AGM/EFB battery are built for it, and it skips stops when the battery is low.
Why won’t the engine auto-stop?
Usually a cold engine, a low battery, or the climate system demanding the engine.
The Stop & Start light is on — is that a fault?
If you switched it off, the light just shows it’s disabled. If you didn’t, it usually points to battery condition — check it if it persists.
If a warning light appeared alongside the fault, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear a service reminder, see our Astra Mk8 service reset guide.
