Last updated:
The Kia Niro Mk2 (SG2, 2022–present) is a hybrid, so it has two separate electrical systems. This guide covers the 12 V auxiliary battery — the part you can safely work on. The high-voltage hybrid battery is never an owner job.
Two Systems — Know the Difference
- The 12 V auxiliary battery runs the lights, locks and computers and wakes the car up. On the Niro Mk2 its disconnect/jump terminals are in the engine bay (a clearly marked 12 V positive jump point and an earth point), which is what you use to cut power.
- The orange high-voltage cabling and hybrid battery drive the car. Never touch them — that’s strictly dealer/technician territory.
Disconnecting the 12 V Power
- Make sure the car is fully off (not READY), the smart key is away, and note your audio security code if you have one.
- At the engine-bay terminals, disconnect the negative (−) earth first.
- If accessing the positive, lift the marked cover on the positive (+) jump terminal.
Keep clear of the orange high-voltage components throughout. If the battery itself needs replacing rather than just disconnecting, follow the location in your owner’s manual for your exact variant or have a workshop do it.
Reconnecting & Re-teaching
- Reconnect positive (+) first, then the negative (−) last.
- Reset the clock and re-enter the radio code if prompted.
- Re-initialise the windows and, if fitted, the sunroof — see our Niro window guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I disconnect the 12V on a Kia Niro Mk2?
At the marked 12 V jump/disconnect terminals in the engine bay — negative (earth) first.
Is it safe to do on a hybrid?
Yes, for the 12 V side. The orange high-voltage system is off-limits.
Does the 12V battery need coding?
No registration is required for the 12 V auxiliary battery.
Can I jump-start the Niro?
Yes — use the engine-bay 12 V jump terminals to wake the car; it then starts the hybrid system itself. Never jump from the high-voltage side.
