Replace the Key Card or Remote Battery

These instructions apply to the Renault Kadjar Mk1 (XFE) 2015-2022. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

A weak fob battery is the usual reason a Renault Kadjar (XFE, 2015–2022) stops locking from range or makes you hold the card right against the start button. Renault used two styles — a slim hands-free keycard and a conventional remote key — and they take different cells.

Which Cell You Need

  • Keycard (hands-free): a CR2025 coin cell.
  • Plip remote key: a CR1620 coin cell.

Buy the type that matches your key before you open it.

Keycard

  1. Slide the small catch and remove the emergency blade.
  2. Split the card halves at the seam (a plastic tool helps).
  3. Swap the CR2025, matching the polarity, and clip it back together.

Plip Remote Key

  1. Pop out the metal emergency blade and use the slot to prise the case open.
  2. Lift out the old CR1620 and fit the new one the same way up.
  3. Press the halves together until they click.

After the Swap

Lock and unlock once within range to confirm. No re-pairing is needed when you only change the battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does a Renault Kadjar key take?

The hands-free keycard uses a CR2025; the plip remote key uses a CR1620.

How do I know which I have?

The flat card is the keycard (CR2025); the chunkier fold-out style is the plip remote (CR1620).

Do I need to reprogram it?

No — a battery change keeps the existing pairing.

My card still won’t work — now what?

Hold it against the start button to start (it reads the transponder), then have the card checked.

Card flat and the car won’t wake? See our Kadjar 12 V battery guide. For a stored fault, look it up on autodtcs.com.
