Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Kia Ceed Mk3 (CD) 2018-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Kia Ceed (Mk3/CD, 2018–Present) — including the five-door, Sportswagon, ProCeed and Ceed GT — was offered with two key systems. Base and mid trims use a flip key turned in an ignition barrel; trims with the Smart Key get keyless entry and a START/STOP button. When the fob goes flat, the recovery depends on which one your Ceed has, and either way you are not locked out.

Start a Smart Key Ceed With a Dead Fob

If your Ceed has a START/STOP button and the dash shows “Key not detected”, the fob radio is dead but the immobiliser can still read the key’s passive transponder at close range.

  1. Let yourself in with the emergency blade (see below), sit in the driver’s seat and press the brake pedal firmly.
  2. Hold the Smart Key flat against the START/STOP button so the chip inside lines up with the reader coil behind it.
  3. Press the button through the fob. The coil energises the transponder, the immobiliser verifies your key and the engine starts.
  4. If it does not catch first time, rotate the fob slightly and press again — the read zone is only a couple of centimetres across.

Flip-key Ceeds are simpler: slot the blade into the ignition barrel and twist as you always do. The coin cell plays no part in starting a turn-key Ceed.

Unlock the Door With the Emergency Key Blade

  1. Slide the catch on the back of the Smart Key and pull the metal blade straight out. On a flip key the blade is exposed once you flick it open.
  2. At the driver’s door, prise off the slim cap behind the handle if one hides the lock cylinder.
  3. Insert the blade and turn to unlock. The alarm may chirp; starting the engine clears it.

Why a Flat Battery Doesn’t Strand You

The engine-authorising chip is a passive RFID transponder with no battery of its own. The car powers it by induction through a coil — behind the START/STOP button on Smart Key cars, around the ignition barrel on flip-key cars. The coin cell only ever ran the remote-lock radio and, on Smart Key cars, the hands-free proximity broadcast. A dead cell costs you remote locking, not the ability to start.

Replace the Coin Cell

  1. Pull the emergency blade out to open the seam in the fob case.
  2. Twist the two halves apart with a coin or thin plastic tool.
  3. The Mk3 Ceed fob takes one CR2032 3V lithium coin cell. Note which way the old one faces — the plus (+) side usually sits towards the rear cover.
  4. Fit the new cell the same way up, handling it by the edges, and clip the case shut until it clicks.

The remote buttons should respond at once. A good cell lasts two to three years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my Ceed have keyless start? The Smart Key with a START/STOP button came on higher trims and the GT. Lower trims use a flip key and an ignition barrel.

Where do I press the fob to start the engine? Flat against the START/STOP button with the brake held, then push the button with the fob still touching it.

My ProCeed remote is dead — will it still start? Yes. On a Smart Key car hold the fob to the button; on a flip-key car use the blade in the barrel. The dead cell only disables the remote buttons.

Why did the alarm sound when I used the blade? Manual entry registers as a possible break-in until the transponder is read. Starting the engine cancels the alarm.

Which battery does the Mk3 Ceed fob take? A single CR2032 3V lithium coin cell, available almost anywhere.

If a warning light stayed on after the no-start, look it up on autodtcs.com to confirm it was just the fob and not a stored immobiliser fault.
