Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Renault Megane Mk4 (XFB) 2016-2022. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 11, 2026

Renault Megane (Mk4, 2016–2022) uses Renault’s hands-free keycard with push-button start, so when the card battery dies the engine still starts: the immobiliser chip inside the card is passive and needs no battery. The Megane Mk4 has no dashboard card slot, so you present the card to the START button by hand rather than dropping it into a reader. This guide walks through the dead-card start, emergency entry, and battery replacement.

Watch for the “Keycard battery low” message in the instrument display, and on the Megane note that if you stop the engine with a weak card you may see “Keycard absent: press START”. That is a hint that the card is barely being read, so fit a new cell.

Starting the Megane Mk4 with a dead keycard

  1. Get into the car with the emergency key (see below) if the remote will not unlock it.
  2. Sit in the driver’s seat holding the keycard.
  3. Press the brake pedal fully and hold it.
  4. Hold the keycard flat against the START/STOP button so it touches the button.
  5. Press the START button. The car’s antenna powers the card chip and the engine starts.
  6. Keep the engine running until a new cell is fitted, because the car may not detect a dead card to restart.

If you ever need to switch off and the display says “Keycard absent: press START”, hold the START button for longer than three seconds to stop the engine.

Unlocking the door with the emergency key

  1. Press the catch on the keycard and slide out the integrated metal key blade.
  2. The emergency lock is on the front of the car, usually under a cap on the driver’s or passenger door handle.
  3. Remove the cap to expose the lock barrel.
  4. Insert the blade and turn to unlock. The alarm may sound and stops once you start with the card.
  5. Slide the blade back into the card before driving.

How the keycard transponder works

The keycard contains a battery-powered radio for the remote lock and unlock buttons and a separate, battery-free transponder chip for the immobiliser. Holding the card on the START button places that chip in the car’s antenna field, which powers it just long enough to read the code. That is why a dead card still starts the Megane but can no longer lock or unlock it remotely.

Replacing the keycard battery

The Megane Mk4 card uses a single CR2032 3V coin cell.

  1. Pull out the emergency key blade to release the card cover.
  2. Unclip the rear cover at the tab to reach the battery.
  3. Remove the old CR2032 and fit the new one, matching the polarity marked inside.
  4. Refit the cover and reinsert the blade.
  5. Stand next to the car and press a card button four times to re-sync it. The warning clears at the next engine start.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Megane Mk4 has no card slot, so where do I put the card? Hold it flat against the START/STOP button with your foot on the brake, then press the button.

What does “Keycard absent: press START” mean? The car has lost sight of a weak card. To stop the engine, hold START for more than three seconds, then fit a new cell.

Can the emergency key start the engine? No. The blade only unlocks the door; the card must be at the START button to start.

Which battery does the Megane Mk4 keycard take? A CR2032 3V lithium coin cell.

Do I need to re-sync the card after a new battery? Yes. Stand by the car and press a card button four times so the car re-learns it.

If a warning light or a stored fault code appears after the keycard goes flat, you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
