The Volkswagen Golf (Mk8, 2020–Present) carries the same rear electric-motor parking-brake calipers as the Mk7, but with the all-touch cabin the EPB control is now a small toggle on the centre console rather than a chunky switch. Changing the rear pads still means putting the electronic parking brake (EPB) into service mode with a scan tool first — there is no owner-only button sequence that retracts the calipers.
What Service Mode Is and Why You Need It
Each rear caliper has an electric actuator that screws a spindle onto the piston to clamp the pads. Fitting fresh, thicker pads needs that spindle wound fully back first. Service mode commands both rear motors to retract, leaving the piston free to push home by hand once the caliper is off the disc.
You will need a tool that reaches the parking-brake module: VCDS, OBDeleven, Carista, or a generic £20–40 OBD EPB/SAS service tool that offers a VAG “brake pad change / lining change” routine. The Mk8’s gateway is fine with these once they’re connected to the OBD socket below the dash on the driver’s side.
Retracting the Caliper
- Park on the level, ignition on, engine off, and connect a battery charger — the Mk8 EPB is very voltage-sensitive and will abort a routine on a tired battery.
- Switch Auto Hold off (tap AUTO HOLD on the touch bar / climate area) and release the EPB.
- In the tool, select [53 — Parking Brake] → Basic Settings → Start lining change mode. Both rear motors run and back the spindles off.
- Wait roughly 30 seconds after the actuators fall silent, then unbolt the caliper. Push the piston straight in by hand — do not rotate it.
Never Force the Pistons
Never use a wind-back clamp, a twisting cube tool, or your hand to force the rear pistons back. The Golf Mk8 piston sits on the EPB motor’s spindle; forcing it strips the actuator gearbox or spindle thread and writes off the caliper. The whole point of service mode is that the motor retracts the spindle electronically — after that the piston needs only gentle, straight hand pressure.
Exit and Bed-In
Once the new pads are in and the caliper torqued up, select End lining change mode in the tool. The motors re-clamp and take up the running clearance. Switch the ignition off and on, apply and release the EPB a couple of times, and confirm the brake-warning light has gone out on the digital cluster. Then bed the pads in with several moderate stops from about 30–40 mph, allowing cooling between them, before driving hard.

Does the Golf Mk8 have an electronic handbrake?
Yes, across the range — the rear calipers are motor-operated and there is no cable lever, so a scan-tool service mode is required for a pad change.
Can the touchscreen put it into service mode?
