Put the Electronic Parking Brake into Service Mode

The Land Rover Discovery Sport (L550, 2015–Present) clamps its rear discs with motor-on-caliper electronic parking brakes (EPB). To change the rear pads you must wind those actuators fully back first, and the Discovery Sport lets you do that from the driver’s seat with brake service (maintenance) mode — a standard pad change needs no dealer scan tool.

What brake service mode does and why you need it

Each rear caliper has an electric actuator bolted to its back. Parking drives the piston out to grip the disc and locks it mechanically; it will not move again until the motor retracts it. Service mode winds both rear actuators fully back and holds the EPB off, so you get the clearance to hinge the caliper away and fit thicker new pads safely.

How to enter brake service mode (Discovery Sport)

  1. Park on level ground, chock a front wheel, select P.
  2. Press Start without pressing the brake so the ignition is ON, engine off.
  3. Release the parking brake: press the EPB switch until the red PARK light goes out.
  4. Press and hold the EPB switch in the release position; wait about one to two seconds.
  5. Still holding it, press the accelerator pedal flat to the floor (wide-open throttle) and hold one to two seconds.
  6. While holding both, switch the ignition OFF with the Start button, then immediately back ON.
  7. An audible whirr confirms the actuators have retracted into service mode. Release the accelerator and the EPB switch.

The brakes stay in maintenance mode until you reset them, and the engine never needs to run. You can now remove the lower caliper bolt, swing the caliper up and change the pads.

Never force the pistons back by hand

Do not push, lever or wind the EPB piston back by hand, and never use a hydraulic compression tool against a powered caliper. The piston is screwed in and out by a geared motor; forcing it strips the gears and destroys the caliper. Retract electronically only. If service mode will not engage, fall back to a generic OBD EPB tool with Land Rover coverage rather than forcing the piston.

Exit service mode and bed in the new pads

After the calipers are back together, exit by repeating the sequence with the EPB switch held in the apply position; the actuators re-tension and the message clears. Press the brake pedal firmly several times to take up the new pads before moving off. Bed in with 6–8 firm slowdowns from around 30 mph to walking pace, allowing the brakes to cool between each, then drive gently for the first 200 miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change Discovery Sport rear pads without a dealer tool? Yes — the in-car service mode retracts the EPB. A generic EPB tool is only needed if the sequence will not take.

Why won’t the sequence work? The parking brake must be released first and the timing is tight; you get one try per ignition-on cycle. Turn fully off, back on, and retry.

Will the EPB re-clamp while I’m working? No — once in service mode it stays released until you exit. Do not unplug the actuator as a shortcut; that can set a fault without retracting the piston.

Does the engine need to run? No. Ignition ON with the engine off is correct.

How do I know it engaged? Listen for the actuator whirr and watch the cluster for the brake service / maintenance message before opening the caliper.
