Reset the Service Indicator

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Audi Q5 Mk2 (FY/80A) 2017-Present.

Short answer: on the Audi Q5 (FY/80A, 2017–present) there is no MMI menu reset for the service interval. Unlike the older 8R, this generation stores the service data so that it can only be reset with Audi diagnostic software (VAS, or a VAG tool such as VCDS or OBDeleven). Here’s what that means, who can reset it, and the DIY options.

When You See the Service Reminder

The Q5 shows a “Service now” or wrench message in the Virtual Cockpit / driver display as the oil or inspection interval comes due. It’s a reminder, not a fault — the car drives normally with it showing.

  • A “Service due” message at start-up that stays after the oil and filter were changed.
  • The reminder returning on schedule because the interval was serviced but never reset.
  • A used Q5 still counting down from the previous owner’s schedule.

Why There’s No Menu Reset on the FY

On the 8R Q5 you could reset the oil-change interval from the MMI. Audi removed that owner access on the FY generation — the service interval now lives in the control units and is rewritten over the diagnostic protocol, so there’s no dashboard or MMI sequence that clears it.

What the Reset Looks Like With a Tool

On a VAG-capable tool the path is roughly Select the Q5 → Service/Maintenance → Reset service interval, following the on-screen prompts. The car’s own dealer tool is VAS; the common enthusiast tools are VCDS and OBDeleven, which both carry Audi service-reset functions.

  • Plug the tool into the OBD-II port (driver’s side, low under the dash).
  • Ignition on, engine off, unless the tool asks otherwise.
  • Select the service/maintenance function and confirm the reset; some tools also let you set the next interval or switch between fixed and flexible (Longlife) servicing.

Who Can Reset It — and DIY

A dealer or independent Audi specialist resets it as part of a service. To do it yourself, an OBDeleven (app + adapter) or VCDS cable is the usual route — both are aimed at exactly this kind of VAG service job. A basic code reader that only clears fault codes will not reset the service interval.

Cost: Dealer vs Independent vs DIY

Which kind of tool does this?

Resetting the FY Q5 service interval needs a VAG-capable tool with Audi service functions: an app-plus-adapter (OBDeleven-style), a laptop cable (VCDS-style), or a multi-make diagnostic tablet that lists Audi. Confirm it supports Audi service-interval reset on the 80A/FY Q5 before buying — a plain code reader won’t do it.

Check It Worked

  • The service message is gone at the next start and stays gone.
  • The service menu shows a full interval again, counting down from new.
  • No new fault codes were left behind by the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset the Audi Q5 (FY) service light without a scanner?

No. This generation has no MMI or button reset — it needs a VAG diagnostic tool such as VCDS or OBDeleven, or a dealer visit.

My older Q5 reset from the menu — why can’t this one?

The 8R Q5 (2008–2017) allowed an MMI oil-interval reset on fixed schedules. Audi removed owner access on the FY, so the reset moved fully into diagnostics.

Does resetting the light service the car?

No — it only clears the message and restarts the counter. Always change the oil and filter first.
