Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Equinox Mk3 2018-2024.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2018–2024 Chevrolet Equinox you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This generation has Stop/Start, so it uses an AGM battery — replace only with AGM. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Reconnect positive first, negative last. Fit only an AGM battery; if charging, use the charger’s AGM setting (limit 14.8 V).
  5. Reset the clock and presets.

FAQ

Can I fit a standard battery?

No — the Stop/Start Equinox needs AGM; a conventional battery wears out early.

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last.

Where’s the battery?

Under the hood in the engine compartment, same on the gas and diesel engines.

If your Equinox stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
