Jump-Start a Dead Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Equinox Mk3 2018-2024.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 2018–2024 Chevrolet Equinox has remote jump terminals under the hood rather than easy access to the battery. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Both vehicles in P, parking brakes on, ignitions off; donor close but not touching.
  2. Open the trim cover over the remote positive (+) terminal (engine bay, driver side).
  3. Red (+) to the remote positive, then to the donor’s positive (+).
  4. Black (−) to the donor’s negative (−), then to the Equinox’s negative grounding stud (left of the windshield washer reservoir).
  5. Run the donor at idle at least four minutes, start the Equinox, remove the cables in reverse order.

FAQ

Where’s the ground point?

The grounding stud to the left of the washer-fluid reservoir — not the battery.

How long before starting?

Let the donor idle at least four minutes, especially from a deeply flat battery.

Still won’t start?

Check the clamps and have the battery/alternator tested if it fails again.

If your Equinox stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
