If the ESP/stability or steering warning light has come on in your Chevrolet Trax (2013–2016) — commonly after a battery disconnection, a wheel alignment, or steering work — the steering angle sensor just needs re-zeroing. You can usually do this without a tool.

The steering angle sensor tells the stability-control system exactly where the front wheels are pointing at any moment. On the first-generation Trax it sits behind the steering wheel, on the column, and its reading is compared against yaw, wheel-speed and lateral-acceleration data so the car knows the difference between a deliberate turn and a slide. When the sensor loses its stored “straight-ahead” reference — which is exactly what happens the moment battery power is interrupted — the system can no longer trust the angle it is being fed, so it flags the stability-control or steering warning light and often stands the electronic aids down until it sees a valid zero point again. Re-initialising the sensor is a normal recalibration, not a repair, and on this model an owner can usually complete it on the driveway.
Why the Light Comes On
The zero position is held in volatile memory, so anything that drops the supply or moves the wheels while the car is asleep can wipe or offset it. That is why the warning so often appears straight after a jump-start, a new battery, a wheel alignment, or any job where the track rods, hub or steering rack were disturbed. In each case the mechanical straight-ahead has shifted relative to what the sensor last recorded, and the module simply wants to be shown the new centre. Once it relearns a stable reference the warning clears itself.
When You Need This
- After disconnecting or replacing the battery.
- After a wheel alignment or steering/suspension work.
- When the ESP/steering warning light is on with no other fault.
First, a Few Checks
- Park on level, open ground with room to move off in a straight line afterwards.
- Make sure the tyres are at their correct pressures and the wheels are roughly straight before you begin.
- Have the engine running so the stability-control system is fully powered during the relearn.
- Keep the windows down or a door open so you can hear if anything unusual happens while turning.
- If you have just done battery work, let the car settle for a moment so all modules wake before you start turning.
Re-initialising the Sensor
- With the engine running, turn the steering wheel slowly from full lock to full lock, then centre it.
- Or simply drive the vehicle in a straight line for a short distance.
- The warning light should go out once the sensor has re-zeroed.
If the Light Stays On
- Make sure the wheels are pointing straight when you finish.
- Repeat the lock-to-lock turn, then drive a short distance.
- Turn slowly and hold briefly at each full lock — snatching the wheel round quickly can stop the module registering the extremes.
- Check that the battery is properly charged and its terminals are tight; a weak supply can prevent the calibration from sticking.
- If the light returns every time, a stored fault may be present and a diagnostic tool can read and clear it, then command the calibration directly.
Once It’s Done
Once the sensor accepts a valid centre, the ESP and steering warnings should stay off and the stability aids will feel normal again. Take a short, gentle drive with a few straight sections and easy turns so the system can confirm the new reference under real conditions. If the light stays out through that drive and after the next few starts, the relearn has held.
